If you haven’t avoided writing enough and you’ve actually finished your novel then the next step is to send it to an agent.
One of the best ways to go about this is to get hold of a copy of The Writers and Artists Yearbook which contains all the publishers and agents worth worrying about.
It also contains good advice about writing a cover letter and a synopsis which you will probably need to submit to your agent along with the first 10,000 words.
Writing a cover letter and synopsis is not only a great diversion from writing your next novel, it’s also a great exercise in finding out what your novel is really about. Having to describe it succinctly makes you really put your finger on the real story and may actually result in you making changes.
I would recommend writing a synopsis as early in the process as possible as it will help focus your mind on what the story is really about and help you to structure, express and conclude your ideas.
